Alabama football’s JC Latham in walking boot, should be ‘ready’ for LSU game

With it being Halloween, Alabama football players were asked about favorite candy and old costumes in the Naylor Stone Media Suite on Tuesday. No player went to the podium dressed up, but JC Latham was wearing something that may scare a Crimson Tide fan days before playing Harold Perkins and LSU: a walking boot over his right foot.

“I mean it’s doing pretty good,” Latham said when asked about it. “Stuff happens. You’re out there, you feel me, you get banged up. It’s no big deal, I’ll be ready to play when the game comes.”

According to Latham, he injured it during the Tide’s last contest on Oct. 21, a comeback win over Tennessee on a play in the third quarter. An Alabama staffer later clarified to reporters that the boot was “precautionary,” and something Latham has worn in-between games this season.

Latham has been No. 8 Alabama’s most consistent offensive lineman this season, starting every game at right tackle. While injuries at the guard position have led to some moving pieces along the Tide’s front, the unit has improved slightly as the season’s moved further into SEC play. This Saturday brings the 13th-ranked Tigers and Perkins, who has 10.5 sacks across his first 22 games.

Latham has anchored one side of the line while Seth McLaughlin and former IMG (Fla.) Academy teammate Tyler Booker holds down center and left guard, respectively. Underclassmen Kadyn Proctor and Elijah Pritchett have rotated at left tackle. Third-year player Jaeden Roberts has seized the opportunity, replacing Darrian Dalcourt and Terrence Ferguson. Latham was asked about Proctor and Roberts on Tuesday.

“Just being able to sustain, finish his blocks and every day going out there and constantly trying to work on one thing that he wants to be great at,” Latham said about Proctor. “… Seeing that out of him, seeing him come in after practice and watch the film and make sure during practice, or even before practice with me when I go warmup, that he’s honing in on like little things that make somebody great.”

Of Roberts: “I’ve seen a lot of confidence building from him. A lot of great things that he’s been doing. He knows his plays. He knows what he’s supposed to do and he’s going out there and being physical. And that’s what you want to have out of the offensive line so just knowing that he’s out there, doing what he has to do to get the job done and be successful at that. He always has a great attitude. So he’s just looking to build and stack days every single day.”
